Applicants should be prepared to complete a background and centeral registery check and answer initial screening questions related to experience, qualifications, and basic eligibility to serve as a host home sponsor. This section focuses on your background caring for adults with IDD, healthcare experience, licensure or credentials, and whether you have an approved backup sponsor who can meet all certification and screening requirements. You will also be asked about certifications such as CPR and First Aid or BLS, Medication Administration, and CPI. If you already hold these certifications but they are expired, that is not a concern, as required certifications can be obtained or renewed in house.
Applicants should also be ready to discuss their housing situation, including ownership or permission to sublease and the ability to provide a lease for the individual as required in Virginia. Additional questions will address financial stability (90 days worth of finances), reliable transportation with insurance, and willingness to complete approximately 20 hours of required unpaid training prior to becoming fully licensed (can be broken up into 3-4 days). These questions help ensure each sponsor can meet DBHDS expectations for safety, continuity of care, and long term stability in a sponsored residential setting.
